Brit and Kasie (Salmon) Barker came to Southern Utah University by way of Davis and Cedar High, earning bachelor's degrees in French/Political Science and Communication, respectively. Their time at Â鶹¹û¶³ÊÓƵ not only established an educational foundation for future success, but a marriage of nearly 30 years.

Kasie, whose father Robert served several years as dean of the College of Business, Technology and Communication here, teaches kindergarten at St. Anne Catholic School, helping young people prepare for their future. “I never thought I would teach kids but volunteered in my children’s classes and realized I had the patience, love and skill set required. I went back to school to secure the California teaching credential. I love teaching children how to read and seeing their self-confidence grow when they succeed and realize they can do hard things.”

Brit works for Origence as sales senior vice president, championing the efforts of the sales team to grow profit and market share within the credit union industry. After his Christian mission, his uncle, a member of the State Board of Regents, and brother, a current T-Bird, encouraged Brit to transfer to Â鶹¹û¶³ÊÓƵ. “It was a tough decision, but I found Kasie and went deep into what Â鶹¹û¶³ÊÓƵ provided such as student government and the outdoors. One of my jobs was being the dean’s assistant and supporting the board of fellows. One of the fellows offered me an opportunity in a small startup software company. I have always enjoyed business and knew my time at Â鶹¹û¶³ÊÓƵ would lead me to go deeper in business.”

The Barkers credit their time as T-Birds to learning about grit: when you work hard you can accomplish your goals. And success is all about interaction with others and finding ways to move forward together. What are they most proud of professionally? “Raising three high-achieving children who are kind and contribute to society.”

Just as they did as Â鶹¹û¶³ÊÓƵ students, Kasie and Brit continue to stay involved in their community. Kasie serves in the Laguna Niguel interfaith community council, and Brit provides professional support to LiFT (Latinx in Finance & Technology), fostering a culture of inclusivity, support and respect.

The Barkers have three children and currently live in Southern California where they enjoy the beautiful weather, cycling and traveling.
